Pre-Prep is where every child’s journey at SRI begins. Spanning FS1 through to Year 2, we aim to build the academic, social and emotional foundations that everything after depends on. Across these four years, learning progresses from play-based discovery to structured, subject-based teaching, in a language-rich environment.

Belonging comes first

Safe enough to

In FS1, feeling safe and secure is the foundation for all learning. Strong relationships, predictable routines and consistent care help children separate confidently and build trust in their environment. That same emphasis on wellbeing and belonging carries through every year of Pre-Prep. By Year 1 and Year 2, children are learning how to manage feelings, work with others, follow routines and show kindness, supported by PSHE embedded throughout the week and a dedicated pastoral team.

Talk and language

Words that open the world.

Talk and language sit at the heart of every stage. FS1 is a language-rich environment built on stories, songs, nursery rhymes and daily conversation. FS2 sharpens this into early reading, with systematic phonics taught through Read Write Inc (RWI), supported by shared reading and storytelling. By Year 1, spoken language becomes the engine of learning itself: children learn to express themselves clearly and confidently. By Year 2, that talk matures into an ambitious vocabulary and full-sentence thinking.

Play evolves into enquiry

Curiosity takes shape.

Through sensory exploration, imaginative play and hands-on experience, children learn in FS1. In FS2, play becomes more purposeful, where children test ideas and deepen understanding independently. By Year 1 and Year 2, this evolves into structured enquiry through science, geography and history. Students observe, ask questions, notice patterns, and begin to draw simple conclusions about the world around them.

Independence builds steadily

Confidence, choice and care.

FS1 introduces the first steps of managing personal care routines, making simple choices, and taking responsibility for belongings. By Year 2, every child is expected to work with increasing confidence and independence across the curriculum.
